On 1 October 2008, the Auckland Motorway Alliance (AMA), publically known as Auckland Motorways, began a 10-year agreement to operate and maintain the Auckland motorway network.

The AMA is a formal Alliance led by the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) with Fulton Hogan, Opus International Consultants, Beca Infrastructure, Resolve Group and Armitage Systems.

There are approximately 80 staff in the Greenlane office plus site crews who carry out the physical maintenance and operations work. There are nine management team members, including an Alliance Director. There is also a leadership team made up of senior directors and executives from the partner companies.

Auckland Motorways is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Auckland motorway network and SH22. The work includes renewals but not large capital projects or planning issues.

The primary objective of Auckland Motorways is to provide a pleasant motorway network which road users confidently know they'll be able to use to get to their destinations comfortably, safely and quickly at all times of the day and night.

An alliance was decided on for the maintenance of the Auckland motorway system because of its complex infrastructure, the focus needed on stakeholders, the NZTA's desire to leave a lasting positive legacy and that through an alliance risk could be shared between all involved parties.
